This was a Marvel week. From all the EW coverage and the number of details and pictures released from Infinity War and other upcoming projects, they completely dominated the news cycle. So let's just get into what they revealed, shall we? Firstly, let me talk about Black Panther 2 and what Feige said about the upcoming film. He confirmed its development and also said that it has a strong direction. They know where they want to take the story and the characters in the sequel and are focused on getting it made sooner rather than later (can you blame them now when it's been #1 at the Box Office for a month?). There was no word on if they had locked down Ryan Coogler to return, but it's not hard to believe that Marvel and Disney would be willing to give him pretty much anything he wanted to return for a sequel. Feige also said the studio was very interested in seeking opportunities to develop spinoff films based on the character in and around T'Challa's world which is super exciting. A film based off any of the rich characters that Coogler cultivated in the first film would be a welcome offshoot from the main set of films in the MCU.
The next bit of news from Marvel was all Infinity War. Including these EW covers and a plethora of stills from the film. Check out a few of my favorite covers:
With the exception of T'Challa, all the main heroes are undergoing some sort of radical makeover. In some cases, it looks really cool (Thor, Captain America), in other cases it looks like the looks were ripped straight out of a weird mech anime (Iron Man). But regardless it is always good to get a refreshing change of pace aesthetically. Not only that but Brolin did some hyping up of Thanos that has me very interested in his character. To start he called Thanos the most intelligent character in the universe and praised how he was just on a different level than everyone else. He's thinking about things on a universal level which is why he's willing to do what he in order to "save" the universe from itself. Thanos looks like he's shaping up to be a badass villain and I can't wait to see what Brolin does with him.
But the news wasn't all Marvel and I wanted to touch on two big stories before I got into the trailer for the week. The first bit of news is in regards to Denis Villeneuve's Dune adaptation which he we now know will be "at least two" films. This is exciting as he has proved he is one of the most interesting and best directors working today and I'm giddy too see what he would do with an arc that is spread over multiple films. The next item has me incredibly excited. Kristen Wiig is confirmed to be play Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2. Two words: HELL. YES. Kristen Wiig is not just one of the most talented comedic actresses of this generation, she's also a sublime dramatic actress (watch The Skeleton Twins for proof). I have no doubt in my mind that she will produce a performance to remember as Diana's nemesis.
Now let's get into the trailer for the week. This was the only major one this week and it doesn't disappoint:
What a jolt of energy that is. This looks so fresh and fun in a way that I haven't really seen before. Boots Riley is looking to establish himself as one of the most stylish and fresh filmmakers working today and I'm here for it. The film looks to mesh magical realism, absurdism, and a healthy does of just weird shit to make a tone and feel that is all tis own I'm just amped for this movie to come out because I just want to experience what it has in store for me. GIVE IT TO ME NOW!
That'll wrap things up for me this week. Look out for a new Infinity War trailer as early as Tuesday. Until next time, have a great week and see some movies. Here's a little something to get you hype for the year to come :).
